AAPI Montclair's "A Harvest Moon Soirée"

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, HRCap co-hosted and volunteered at AAPI Montclair’s special event “A Harvest Moon Soirée” to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, raise awareness of Asian American stories, and fundraise for the organization’s mission, which is to facilitate a safer space to share AAPI experiences through special events.

Over 215 people of diverse ethnicities attended to support and participated in the festivities, and through the silent auctions and generous donor contributions, AAPI raised $70,000 altogether.

During the event, Michelle Li, a Missourian news anchor and reporter at KSDK, shared her experience of going viral from a reaction video to a voicemail message that criticized her for sharing her cultural food on TV finding it offensive and “Very Asian”. This led her to create the Very Asian Foundation, which gives support and resources for the expansion of Asian stories and experiences and provides grants to organizations working within the Asian community.

After her story, two high school students from Livingston AAPI Youth Alliance (LAYA) came to share their experience of seeing the lack of Asian American representation in their school’s curriculum and how they advocated for Asian History Curriculum Legislative Bills (S4021 and A6100), which were passed and signed by Governor Phil Murphy on January 18, 2022. New Jersey is the second state, following Illinois, to pass the AAPI curriculum requirement.
